What is the Calcutta?
A Calcutta is a live demonstration and auction, where the horse and rider entries for tonight’s main event will jump two practice fences and the audience will bid on each horse. You can bid too!! Those who are the successful bidders on the horses who place 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the main event will get a piece of the pot!
Once the bidding is done, the horses will return for the main event, sponsored by Equine Choice. In this event, entries will be competing over a course of jumps. The name of the class is a “Gambler’s Choice”. Each jump on course is assigned a point value and the riders will strategize the best path to jump the obstacles and accumulate as many points as possible in the time allowed.
Strategy is an important part of the class and long term partnerships may have an advantage as they know each other well. Keep that in mind when you are bidding!
Calcutta Payout
60% of the pot goes to the charity. Of the remaining 40%:
- Half goes to the successful bidder on the 1st place horse
- 30% goes to the successful bidder on the 2nd place horse
- 20% goes to the successful bidder on the 3rd place horse
Photo Opportunity
Following final ribbon presentations and victory gallop, the successful bidders on the top 3 horses will be invited to be professionally photographed with their horse & rider combination!
